About Kiki Kaltwasser

Research turned into ART

I was born and raised in Germany and my journey with horses started at 4 years old with pony riding and later professional lessons at the age of 10 until today.
In 2005 I moved to France and founded the European Equine Academy where I teach riders to train horses in a non violent way.
But it was in 2009 on a German horse fair when something life changing happened: I heard about the Canadian wild horses. A week after the fair I packed my bags an flew to Canada. My passion for wild horses started and has never left me ever since. In 2012 I immigrated with my daughter and 2 dogs to British Columbia, Canada.
With my academy we started the private funded research project about the last free roaming wild horses in Canada to bring more attention to these amazing creatures, to protect their habitat and to research on equine behaviour and heritage.

Over 10 years of creating "paintings" with my camera
Now I've been roaming the Chilcot'in Mountains with my notebook and camera for over 10 years. In 2013 and 2014 I had the great opportunity to exhibit in the Touchstone Museum in Nelson, BC and since then more and more exhibitions followed: Nelson Artwalk, Pop Up Exhibitions in the Hamptons/New York USA and Los Angeles California as well as in Germany. My art is featured in several magazines and in the "Competitive Equestrian Magazine" with 30 pages.
I feel very fortunate and grateful to observe these magnificent creatures. The wild horses give me a very intimate insight in how horses are organized and how their behaviour changes during the seasons of the year. All these insights are published in my courses
and  7 books (in german and english).
These wild horses are very shy and I can not get closer than about 600 meters. Their habitat is the deep forest as well as clear cuts all together in an area of about 22000km2.

My photography style
I love to create a soft painting style that I call "photomentary" (my self created type of a mix between photo and documentary) where the main focus is on creating a painting style document of a specific moment.
